The Filmic 5: Team Rose Forever Edition

The Filmic 5: Team Rose Forever Edition

Your Weekly Film Superlatives By Critic and Film Scholar Jack Hanley

I. Film I Am Loving This Week

I am still ruminating on Mascha Schilinski’s Cannes-winning MASTERWORK, SOUND OF FALLING- a haunting, century-spanning ensemble piece that bears witness to multiple generations of women that "...take up spectral residence in a German farmhouse."

I especially enjoyed this piece by my film critic friend (and friend of the site) Olga Artemyeva for Screen Anarchy. The first truly great film of 2026 so far.

II. SNL Film Sketch That I Laughed Way Too Loudly At This Week

III. Podcast Episode I Am Obsessed With This Week

Brilliant actress (and young Jack Hanley movie crush) Kate Winslet joins the BBC's Desert Island Discs podcast to discuss her childhood acting journey forged from bullying and body-shaming, why she'll NEVER let some Vogue editor airbrush her "face or arse", and how she landed her breakout film role mid-sandwich.

Enjoy this brilliant episode of Desert Island Discs with Lauren Laverne...and never fear, Rose...you'll always be immortal in THIS Jack's heart.

IV. Critic's List I'm STOKED About This Week

Now in its third year, The Popcorn List is an annual survey of critically lauded feature films currently without wide release. This year's edition is offering up 25 films recommended by film festival programmers from across the United States.

Via our friends at Indiewire, "...the TPL exists as both an open, online database (check out its website right here) and as a Pop Up Series, bringing “fresh, hot films” to audiences around the country via sneak-peek screenings at art house cinemas and through a virtual format."

V. My Anti-Oscar Ballot I'm Sharing This Week

Each year, HANLEYONFILM.com critic Jack Hanley crafts a nominee list in eight categories comprised entirely of often the more deserving films and performances ignored, snubbed, or neglected by the Academy Awards nomination committee. We select the year’s most compelling and brilliant performances and films IGNORED by the official ballot. You won’t find the usual cloying, middle-America, Studio-padded Oscar-fodder here- only the best of the year in cinema. Enjoy.
